More pharmacists in the community setting are overcoming barriers to expand their practice, if this year’s applications to the Canadian Foundation for Pharmacy (CFP) Innovation Fund are any indication. “We’re impressed and encouraged by both the number and calibre of applications that involved grassroots pharmacists,” says Marshall Moleschi, registrar of the Ontario College of Pharmacists and president of CFP’s board.
CFP’s ability to support these pharmacists, however, depends on donations from corporations and individuals. “We’re essentially Canada’s charitable foundation for pharmacy, and our mandate is to put our resources toward supporting and promoting innovation and leadership,” says Moleschi. Its Innovation Fund, for example, has provided more than $750,000 in funding to pharmacy researchers and, increasingly, innovative practice models since 2006. The Foundation is currently reviewing more than 21 applications for this year’s Innovation Fund Grant worth up to $50,000, and the recipients will be announced in the fall.
Currently just 10% of monies raised come from individuals (namely pharmacists). In an effort to persuade more pharmacists to make CFP one of their charities of choice, the board is carrying out plans to raise the foundation’s profile among practicing and student pharmacists; for instance, in 2015 it will publish Canada’s first pharmacy management textbook in almost 20 years, drawing upon the expertise of leading pharmacists, corporate pharmacy and academia. “When you support CFP, you support the future of your profession by nurturing innovation during this exciting period of transition for pharmacy,” says Moleschi.
